The OECD's AHELO initiative to define the learning outcomes of graduates in Economics and Engineering

The objective of the Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes (AHELO) initiative, which has the support of the OECD Education Ministers, is to assess the feasibility of an external assessment of learning outcomes, or generic skills and discipline-specific skills, that university students should be acquiring. The first stage of the work has focused on two selected disciplines, Economics and Engineering.

AHELO's May Newsletter gives the reports with the conceptual framework for the expected and desired learning outcomes for graduates in Economics and Engineering. In defining the learning outcomes in these two selected disciplines, the OECD worked closely with the Tuning Educational Structures in Europe association, with the collaboration of a number of recognised experts in the field.

The reports set out a series of learning outcomes for graduates in Economics and Engineering at the transnational level, together with and an overview of the state of education in each field.

The results will be used as benchmarks in the respective disciplines and serve as the basis for tools for assessment in corresponding university faculties. This is the first stage towards creating a PISA-type report on higher education.
