Overall assessment of the accreditation programme for senior lecturer and professorial staff, 2003-2010

The AQU's CAR Commission (Research Assessment Commission) was set up on 2 April 2003, pursuant to articles 146 and 147 of the Catalan Universities Act (LUC), with a view to establishing the criteria for the accreditation of research and advanced research and to define and carry out the process of accreditation.

The structure of the CAR is as follows: a plenary, which consists of the chairperson and twenty members, and six special review panels according to subject area. Between 2003-2010, more than two hundred and thirty reviewers sat on the CAR commission.

During this time, fifteen (15) calls were made for research accreditation and 3,368 applications were received, of which 1,616 (50%) were favourably assessed. Fifteen calls were made for advanced research accreditation and 1,084 applications were received, of which 615 (58%) were favourably assessed.

From 2006 onwards, the CAR has evaluated the individual merits in research of public service and contract teaching and research staff at the public universities in Catalonia within the context of academic staff salary increases. Four calls for applications from public service teaching and research staff were made and 2,283 applications were received, of which 2,212 (97%) were favourably assessed. Five calls for applications from contract teaching and research staff were made and 1,982 applications were received, of which 1,737 (81%) were favourably assessed.

The CAR also evaluates the individual merits in research of academic staff at the private universities in Catalonia (2 calls, 219 applications received) and from the University of Extremadura (3 calls, 161 applications received).
