Lluís Torner, new chairman of AQU's Research Assessment Commission (CAR)

The appointment of Lluís Torner as Chairman of AQU's Research Assessment Commission (CAR) in replacement of Joan Rodés, who was the first CAR Chairman when the body was set up in 2003, has now become effective.

Lluís Torner Sabata has a degree in Physics from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), a doctoral degree from UPC/BarcelonaTech and has been a Professor at UPC since 2000. He was a post-doctoral researcher and collaborated with various universities in the United States, and he has been director of the Institute of Photonic Science (ICFO) since 2002 when the institute was founded. His academic activities have focused on research and training in the applications of photonics, a field in which he has published more than 350 articles in international journals. He was chosen as one of the youngest Fellows to the Optical Society of America, and he was recently elected as a Fellow of the European Optical Society and the European Physical Society. He was President of the Catalan Association of Research Centres from 2009-2014. He was awarded the Optical Society of America’s Leadership Prize in 2011, amongst other international awards.
