Protocol approved for the monitoring and renewal of accreditation of recognised university degrees

The General Conference for University Policy (Conferencia General de Política Universitaria) and the Spanish Universities Council (Consejo de Universidades) have endorsed the protocol for the monitoring and renewal of accreditation of recognised university degrees, which sets out the minimum criteria and basic indicators for the monitoring of the curricula of recognised degree programmes in Spain.

The drawing up of the document mainly involved the Recognised Degree Monitoring and Accreditation Commission (Comisión para el Seguimiento y Acreditación de los Títulos Universitarios Oficiales, SATUO), which is made up of representatives from the Ministry of Education, the regional Autonomous governments, quality assurance agencies (including AQU Catalunya) and the universities.

There are four sections to the protocol:

  1. Legal principles
  2. Working group
  3. Recommendation for the monitoring of recognised degrees
  4. Proposed indicators

The first two sections of the document, which were drafted mostly by the Ministry of Education, provide the context, whereas sections three and four were drawn up by the Spanish university QA agencies network (REACU) and cover the minimum aspects that QA agencies have agreed to incorporate in common in their respective monitoring procedures.

The Framework for the ex ante accreditation, monitoring, modification and accreditation of recognised degrees, endorsed by the AQU Catalunya Board of Management on 2 July 2010, is fully compatible with the principles of action envisaged in the protocol, which are extended and refined through the linking of the four processes of ex ante accreditation, monitoring, modification and accreditation, and a more fully defined series of indicators.
