University quality reveals its full value when knowledge, technology and social needs evolve faster than the frameworks designed to respond to them. Ensuring academic rigour calls for foresight, innovation and a commitment to equity. The thirtieth anniversary of AQU Catalunya invites us to celebrate that commitment and to acknowledge the Agency’s contribution to a quality culture that safeguards academic excellence and broadens the horizons of higher education.
The history of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya is inseparable from this vision. Today, our graduates benefit from qualifications endorsed by an AQU Catalunya that has known how to go beyond its assessment role and take on, with institutional courage and confidence, the challenge of adapting academic recognition frameworks to an unprecedented educational model.
The UOC was founded with a public mandate and the unequivocal aim of democratising access to higher education through a radically pioneering proposition: the world’s first fully online university. With our own asynchronous educational model, we put technology at the service of flexible learning, compatible with a wide range of personal and professional circumstances. More than three decades later, equal opportunities continue to guide our transformative mission, which has taken shape in a tangible reality: wider access to university, regardless of the constraints of time and place.
Today, our graduates benefit from qualifications endorsed by an AQU Catalunya that has known how to go beyond its assessment role and take on, with institutional courage and confidence, the challenge of adapting academic recognition frameworks to an unprecedented educational model.
Achieving this has required us to make quality a non-negotiable principle in all our decisions. For the UOC, this requirement has been the sine qua non for demonstrating the soundness of our model and legitimising our founding purpose of placing education at the service of people and society. And it is precisely for this reason that this is a journey we could not have made without the close cooperation of AQU Catalunya.
Our collaboration, based on rigour, high academic standards and openness to innovation, has made it possible to verify online degree programmes, recognise remote curricular work placements and accredit fully virtual assessment processes. Beyond expanding the Agency’s assessment capacity and strengthening its role in the recognition of online higher education, this shared journey has built up a store of trust that benefits the Catalan university system as a whole. Herein lies AQU Catalunya’s most significant contribution: fostering higher education that is more accessible, more equitable and more closely aligned with the needs of people and their communities.
The value of this experience is particularly evident in the current context. Digitalisation has vastly expanded the possibilities for accessing knowledge, but it has also accelerated the commodification of higher education. The very technologies that make it possible to democratise knowledge can also encourage models that subordinate education to economic profitability, to the point of reducing students to consumers and knowledge to a commodity. In the face of this tension, quality assurance becomes essential to preserve the public value of universities and to ensure that wider access goes hand in hand with academic excellence, equity and benefits for society.
Three decades of history attest to AQU Catalunya’s ability to continue playing a decisive leadership role in the evolution of university quality
This responsibility also requires us to tackle another structural challenge: achieving a truly interoperable European Higher Education Area. The path we have travelled together with AQU Catalunya now enables us to bring unique experience to the roll-out of the Joint European Degree Label, a framework that still makes it difficult for online higher education to be recognised on an equal footing. Through the European T-LED project1, linked to the OpenEU and EU4Dual alliances, we are putting this commitment into practice in order to address these limitations and make progress towards the full recognition of digital education. Because this is a matter of equity: interoperability must make it possible to overcome academic and territorial barriers, so that knowledge can circulate more freely and learning opportunities are accessible to more people.
Three decades of history attest to AQU Catalunya’s ability to continue playing a decisive leadership role in the evolution of university quality. Celebrating the road travelled means recognising an institution that has succeeded in placing high academic standards at the service of innovation. Above all, however, it means reaffirming a conviction that unites us: high-quality higher education is a force for progress, cohesion and social justice. Thank you for making it possible.
