AQU Catalunya publishes an analysis of institutional accreditation monitoring reports
The document focuses on the first two years of implementation of this new form of accreditation.
AQU Catalunya has today published the document Analysis of institutional accreditation monitoring reports, presented to the Institutional and Programme Review Commission (CAIP) on 13 July 2026 and prepared by Glòria González, chair of the Specific Commission for Institutional Assessment (CEAI) and also a member of the CAIP. The main aim of the document is to analyse how the implementation of this new form of institutional accreditation has worked over the past two years.
The first monitoring reports have been submitted and assessed since the 2023-2024 academic year, coinciding with the launch of the CEAI, which was established at the end of 2023. Over the two years analysed, AQU Catalunya assessed a total of 30 monitoring reports, 18 corresponding to 2024 and 12 to 2025. This initial experience has made it possible to identify common patterns, strengths and recurring difficulties, while also contributing to the gradual consolidation of the process and its methodology.
The analysis of the reports shows that, in general, centres have implemented and operational internal quality assurance systems (IQAS), with defined processes, indicators, improvement plans and periodic review mechanisms. It also shows good formal alignment between the strategies of the centres and those of the universities, as well as generally satisfactory academic and employment outcomes. However, the main challenges identified include the need to strengthen traceability between strategic objectives, actions and final results; increase stakeholder participation; improve participation in satisfaction surveys; and make progress in certain aspects related to teaching staff and human resources planning.
Overall, the first years of implementation confirm monitoring as a tool for reflection, support and improvement for centres, beyond a strictly verification-based function. The experience gained should help strengthen the coherence of the assessment model and provide centres with a more solid basis for undertaking the first renewals of institutional accreditation.
Institutional accreditation monitoring has been incorporated into AQU Catalunya's assessment model as an intermediate stage between the initial accreditation of university centres and its renewal. The process aims to verify that centres maintain and further develop the quality standards achieved through the effective operation of their Internal Quality Assurance System (IQAS). With an approach geared towards continuous improvement, monitoring makes it possible to identify good practices, areas for improvement and recommendations that should help prepare for future renewals of institutional accreditation.
