AQU Catalunya Governing Board appointed a new member of the Research Assessment Commission (CAR), chaired by Dr. Maria Pau Ginebra Molins. The Technical University of Catalonia professor Dr. Jordi Cortadella Fortuny, who served a second non-extendable term as a commission member, was replaced by Dr. Jordi Catalan Vidal following the election.
Currently, Dr. Catalan is a full professor of Economics and History at the University of Barcelona. Upon recommendation of Joaquim Nadal, the Minister for Research and Universities, Dr. Catalan will be one of the four CAR members to join. Including the secretary, the commission will now have 22 members in total, 13 of whom are women. This makes the panel's gender balance intact.
The Research Assessment Commission is the permanent commission for the assessment, accreditation and certification of AQU Catalunya as established in article 3.1 of Law 15/2015, of 21 July, on the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency. It is governed by internal regulations, AQU Catalunya Statutes, and Agency Law, which specify its structure, operations and functions.
The Governing Board appoints the president of the CAR, who is chosen from a list of candidates put forward by the councillor of the department in charge of universities. The president of the CAR must also have notable scientific achievements. Second, the department in charge of universities proposes candidates for appointment, and the Governing Board selects four of them. Lastly, it is composed of sixteen members who are chosen by the Governing Board based on the commission president's recommendation. Members of the CAR are appointed to four-year terms that are renewable once, and they are required to serve until their replacements assume office.
