Publication of the "Guide to accreditation of medical degrees" according to AQU Catalunya and World Federation for Medical Education standards
The aim of accreditation set out in this guide is to ensure that study programmes meet the legal requirements set by the higher education authorities and that the level of training achieved by graduates is in line with the level accredited by the institution. To meet this goal, the guide certifies compliance with eight dimensions.
On 13 December 2022, the AQU Catalunya Institutional and Programme Review Commission approved the Guide to accreditation of medical study programmes according to the AQU Catalunya standards and the WFME global standards for quality improvement.
The World Federation for Medical Education is a global association created in 1972 that develops standards for medical education and promotes the accreditation of medical schools with the goal of improving the quality of medical education around the world.
The accreditation of medical degrees according to the WFME reflects positively on those graduating from accredited medical schools. For example, from 2024 people with degrees who want to practise Medicine in the United States or who want to carry out practical hands-on medical activities as part of postgraduate training or continuing education in that country must have graduated from an accredited centre under these standards.
The Guide has been updated to respond to the 2020 WFME Basic Medical Education (BME) standards. In drawing up the Guide, previous experience gained thanks to the assessment of the Faculties of Medicine of the International University of Catalonia and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Girona has been taken into account.
The Guide's assessment dimensions, which are used to guarantee that graduates are in compliance with the legal requirements and the level of training, are as follows:
- Mission and values
- Curriculum
- Assessment and results
- Students
- Academic staff
- Educational resources
- Quality assurance and public information
- Governance and administration
