Recognised postgraduate programmes (2005-2008)
Recognised postgraduate programmes (POP), introduced from the 2006-2007 academic year onwards, constituted the first structural reform of the Catalan university system in line with EHEA guidelines. Recognised postgraduate programmes were developed to bring together the postgraduate educational courses being offered in a coherent, flexible and dynamic way, mainly for Masters and doctoral programmes. They were determined by the university in accordance with its academic approach in terms of education, and they included specialisation to a greater or lesser extent, emphasis on the development of research skills and/or professional competence. They thus included a wide range of complex study programmes with different profiles such as mixed/academic, programmes with a research and/or professional orientation, and also a cross-discipline approach to knowledge.
The Directorate-General for Universities (DGU) assigned AQU Catalunya with the task of conducting an ex-ante assessment of the academic dimension of new recognised postgraduate study programmes being introduced in 2006-2007 and 2008-2009. The purpose of these assessments was to ensure the quality of new recognised postgraduate programmes prior to their introduction. Assessment constituted an important factor for subsequent authorisation by the Directorate General, although it was not decisive.
