AQU Catalunya participated yesterday in the 6th Teaching Quality Conference of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), held at the Faculty of Law on the Bellaterra campus. The Agency’s Director, Mercè Gisbert, focused her presentation on teaching evaluation surveys, placing particular emphasis on their value as a tool for quality enhancement and assessment.
Gisbert’s contribution followed the opening address delivered by the University’s Rector, Javier Lafuente, and the presentation of a report by the Vice-Rector for Studies and Quality, Ramón Vilanova. The report reviewed general quality-related issues at UAB and provided details of the university’s new survey initiative. The event concluded with a session devoted to sharing best practices in the management of teaching quality surveys.
Since 2003, AQU Catalunya has worked closely with Catalonia’s public and private universities to develop and implement teaching evaluation manuals for academic staff. These manuals are formal, jointly agreed documents that set out each university’s teaching evaluation policy. They define the methodology, stakeholders, instruments and objectives of the teaching evaluation process. Universities establish their own evaluation models, while the Agency certifies that these models are implemented in accordance with its established criteria.
The evaluation of teaching activity has long been one of the Agency’s priorities. In 2002, together with the Inter-University Council of Catalonia and the Catalan public universities, AQU Catalunya launched an “experimental phase” aimed at establishing shared criteria and reference frameworks to support universities in developing their own evaluation manuals. This initiative was pioneering across Spain.
