AQU Catalunya Participates in a Virtual Seminar of the World Federation for Medical Education on Cross-Border Accreditation
The project manager of AQU Catalunya, Carme Edo, delivered a presentation focused on the evaluation of medical studies in Iceland carried out by the Agency.
AQU Catalunya took part in the online seminar of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), Beyond Borders: Cross-border Accreditation in the WFME Recognition Programme. The Agency was represented by Carme Edo, project manager in the Quality Assessment Area, who delivered a presentation focused on the evaluation of medical studies in Iceland, a real case conducted by AQU Catalunya that helps illustrate the dynamics and methodology applied in this type of evaluation.
The session aimed to provide an overview of the development of cross-border accreditation within WFME, along with an explanation of the most relevant criteria of existing recognition programmes. It also outlined WFME’s policy and procedures for assessing cross-border activities. In this context, Edo contributed the experience of the Agency for the Quality of the University System of Catalonia in the accreditation of medical studies in Iceland, showing how these principles are applied in practice.
The session also featured Professor David Gordon, former President of WFME, who spoke about the origins of the idea of cross-border accreditation recognition; project manager and WFME evaluator Barbora Hrabalová, who focused on specific recognition criteria in BME and PGME programmes; and Jana Cohlová, project manager of the WFME Recognition Programme, who addressed WFME’s current policy on cross-border accreditation and its implementation process.
The World Federation for Medical Education is a global association founded in 1972 that develops standards for medical education and promotes the accreditation of medical schools worldwide. Its aim is to improve the quality of medical education globally, and it is the official organisation representing medical education and the training of doctors to the World Health Organization (WHO). AQU Catalunya is the first Spanish agency and the fifth European agency to obtain WFME accreditation.
