AQU Catalunya takes part in the 8M commemorative event of the Department of Research and Universities
The session, held today, has provided a space to reflect on gender equity in professional development in research centres and universities.
AQU Catalunya took part today in the 8 March – International Women’s Day commemorative event organised by the Department of Research and Universities (DREU) and I-CERCA. The event, held in the DREU meeting room, mainly consisted of a round table on gender equity in the knowledge system, focusing specifically on diagnosis, challenges and good practices to promote equity in professional development. As stated by the organisers, the event was framed within “the dissemination of the mission of the Gender Equality Strategy in Science (EIGEC) across the system as a whole”, and aimed to “combine recent evidence, institutional experiences and good practices from research actors”, with the collaboration of the Department of Equality and Feminism.
The round table included the Head of the Academic Staff Evaluation Area at AQU Catalunya, Esteve Arboix, together with the gender policy researcher at Universitat Rovira i Virgili Inma Pastor, the co-coordinator of the CERCA-REMA feminist mentoring programme Núria Alcaraz, and the Talent Manager of the Institut d’Investigació i Innovació Parc Taulí (I3PT) Lola Prados. In particular, the discussion focused on the results of the study Gender bias in recruitment, promotion and retention of staff in universities: 2023 report (Quintana and Pastor, 2023, Xarxa Vives d’Universitats), on the explanation of corrective measures implemented to mitigate gender bias in professional development (AQU), and on good practices from research actors in the CERCA-REMA feminist mentoring programme and at I3PT Parc Taulí, which has recently received the Equality in the Company award from the Spanish Ministry of Equality.
Among the various actions by AQU Catalunya to address gender bias, particular emphasis was placed on the approval last year by the Research Assessment Commission of the Agreement on measures to ensure equality and work-life balance in the evaluation of academic staff. The round table was moderated by the Secretary for Feminism, Yolanda Ferrer.
