AQU Catalunya Launches the Cycle ‘University Quality and Integrity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence’
One of the aims of the cycle, co-organised with the Inter-University Council of Catalonia, is to help generate guidance that supports stakeholders in the Catalan university system in acting according to solid and shared principles in this new context.
AQU Catalunya and the Inter-University Council of Catalonia have today inaugurated the cycle University Quality and Integrity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence at the Aula Capella of the University of Barcelona (UB). The aim of this series of events is to create a space for shared reflection on how to ensure a culture of quality in an environment where opportunities coexist with technological risks. It also seeks to help generate guidance that enables stakeholders in the Catalan university system to act according to solid and shared criteria in this new reality.
The inaugural session, the first of five in the cycle, focused on analysing how artificial intelligence and new technologies are transforming the functioning of universities and what is meant by quality and integrity. The event featured the participation of the Rector of the UB, Joan Guàrdia; the President of AQU Catalunya, Francesc Xavier Grau; the Director General for Universities, Miquel Soriano; and the Secretary of the Inter-University Council of Catalonia, Xavier Martínez. Together, they welcomed more than 130 attendees in person and over 850 registered participants online, as the session was streamed live on YouTube.
Following the introduction, the Secretary for Telecommunications and Digital Transformation of the Government of Catalonia, Albert Tort, presented the talk Catalonia AI Strategy 2030 in relation to research and universities. This was followed by the round table AI at the University: What is Happening and What Comes Next, featuring Jordi Vitrià (University of Barcelona), Mireia Usart (Rovira i Virgili University), Sergi Robles (Autonomous University of Barcelona), and student Paula Gelpí (Ramon Llull University).
Before closing remarks by the Director of AQU Catalunya, Mercè Gisbert, philosopher Marina Garcés, professor at the Open University of Catalonia, delivered the keynote lecture The Value of Integrity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.
The four remaining sessions are:
- Research integrity (2 July 2026, University of Girona).
- Teaching identity and new professional competences (date and location to be determined).
- Students and learning with AI: autonomy, critical thinking and employability (date and location to be determined).
- Quality assurance with AI (date and location to be determined).
The aim of the cycle is to learn from concrete experiences in Catalan universities, share current and future challenges, and collectively discuss possible approaches. This shared reflection should help the Catalan university system move towards a more solid, coherent and coordinated vision of how to act in this new stage.
