AQU Catalunya analyses the employability of graduates in the field of Communication in Catalonia
Today, we hosted the webinar “Employability and university training in the field of Communication”, where the results of the report of the same name were made public for the first time. In this document, the Agency provides data on the employment outcomes of Communication graduates – Audiovisual Communication, Journalism and Advertising and Public Relations, on their vision and that of their employers, with regard to the training they received at university.

AQU Catalunya today published the report Employability and university training in the field of Communication, as part of the webinar organised by the Agency in collaboration with the “la Caixa” Banking Foundation.
The report offers a cross-sectional look at the degrees in Audiovisual Communication, Journalism and Advertising and Public Relations by grouping the data from the Satisfaction, Employment Outcomes and Employers' Opinion surveys that the Agency regularly carries out of students and the companies and organisations that hire graduates. In addition, this report also collects basic data on the degree programmes analysed, such as the ratio of places to demand or biological sex of the people who study them, among others.
Among the most relevant data collected are those that show the imbalance between the supply of places and the demand for them by students – as first choice, in June. In public universities, the demand for the degrees analysed far exceeds the number of places available. The worst difference is in Advertising and Public Relations, where the number of places demanded was 89% higher than the number of places offered.
The report also reveals that graduates of the degree programmes analysed tend to have an overall satisfaction with their degrees below the average of the degrees of the Catalonia university system (SUC). In terms of employment outcomes, Advertising and PR graduates have a better employment rate than the SUC as a whole. In Audiovisual Communication, the employment outcomes of graduates in terms of salary and type of contract tend to be worse than those of the SUC as a whole.
The document also shows that the employer group has difficulty finding the right profile. Specifically, 4 out of 10. This fact is highlighted especially by those entities that hire people with degrees in Advertising and PR, where it rises to 53%. These amounts vary widely for bachelor's degrees in Journalism and Audiovisual Communication. The employers also value graduate skills positively, with 7 out of 10. One skill that is seriously lacking, according to employers, is the ability to devise, plan, design, and execute communicative projects. Also, one third of employers of graduates from all degrees highlight the need to improve the ability to present ideas and arguments in a reasoned way.
