AQU Catalunya publishes the CAIP 2023 report
Throughout the past year, the Institutional and Programme Review Commission (CAIP) has evaluated a total of 82 proposals for validation, 95 for modification, 39 for monitoring and 165 for accreditation. In addition, it has validated compliance with the criteria for institutional accreditation of 18 centres. Among other issues, the Commission has also worked on the preparation of Benchmarks and the creation of the Institutional Assessment Commission.
The Institutional and Programme Review Commission's (CAIP) 2023 activity is included in a report that AQU Catalunya has already made public. As can be seen in the document, over the course of last year this commission dealt with a total of 82 validation proposals presented by Catalan universities, including bachelor's and master's degrees. 91% of these proposals received positive assessments from the CAIP.
In 2023, the committee analysed 95 proposals for the modification of existing syllabuses to be implemented in the academic year 2023-2024: 28 for bachelor's degrees, 46 for master's degrees and 21 for PhDs. During the 2023 financial year, the CAIP also monitored 20 degree programmes with conditional accreditation reports and 19 degree programmes with requirements in the validation reports. Specifically, monitoring corresponded to 23 bachelor's degree programmes, 15 master's degree programmes and 1 PhD programme. In addition, the commission assessed 7 accreditations (24%) as having exceeded requirements, out of a total of 29 monitoring accreditations.
During 2023, all final accreditation reports for official university degree programmes for the 2022 visits were also completed. Overall, 165 degree accreditation reports were issued. Overall, 64 external visits were organised in 2023 to assess the performance of 85 degree programmes. Finally, as far as quantitative activity results are concerned, during 2023, 18 centres (Faculties, Schools, Institutes and/or Departments) obtained a positive assessment report for institutional accreditation. To obtain the first institutional accreditation, the centres must accredit 50% of bachelor's degrees, 50% of master's degrees and 50% of doctoral degrees, and have the IQAS certification. In 2023, 9 IQAS certification processes corresponding to the 2022 call have been completed and 8 external visits have been made to centres that form part of the 2023 call for IQAS certification.
Specific activity in 2023
In addition to the activity described above, the CAIP also worked throughout 2023 on other challenges, including the completion of the IQAS Specific Certification Committee and the creation of the Specific Institutional Assessment Committee. Secondly, another major change was the modification of the Guide for the certification of IQAS implementation in higher education centres, which includes PhD Schools and lifelong learning in its scope. Thirdly, the publication of the Benchmarks, which facilitate the design of new programmes or the updating of the assessment guides, which have been aligned with the current legal frameworks, deserves special mention among other activities.
According to the activity rerport, drawn up by the AQU Catalunya Quality Assurance Department, the CAIP's activity is in line with the duties granted to it by the agreement of the Governing Board and those established in the Agency's Statutes, in accordance with the provisions of Law 15/2015 of 21 July 2015. This means that the CAIP ensures the correct application of the set of quality assurance instruments and processes that the Agency carries out at institutional level, as well as their projection and improvement, facilitating, in turn, cooperation and exchange with other institutions at national and international level.
