Presenting results of schools survey on training of new teachers
The results were presented to the deans of the faculties of education of Catalan universities. One of the conclusions for improvement is the need to improve the ability to manage the classroom of primary and secondary schoolteachers who have recently graduated

The schools survey, which was carried out on school principals in 2018, aims to know their opinion on the training of new teaching staff hired and recent graduates of Early Childhood Education and Primary Education bachelor's degrees and the Master's Degree in Secondary and Upper Secondary Education, Vocational Training and Foreign Language Teaching. In particular, it collects information on cross-disciplinary and specific skills in areas where there is considerable room for improvement.
The study indicates that satisfaction with the competencies of primary schoolteachers and secondary schoolteachers is 6.6 and 6.5 (out of 10), respectively. In comparison, they are lower valuations than those found in other sectors.
The main results were the following:
- Cross-disciplinary skills for both preschool and primary schoolteachers and secondary schoolteachers: more than half of the centres say training in problem-solving and decision-making skills should be improved. Graduates are also lacking in practical training (48%), creativity (47%), teamwork (45%) and responsibility at work (41%).
- Specific skills of preschool and primary schoolteachers: 68% of centres consider that there are shortcomings in ability to manage the classroom. Other skills follow: detection and action in difficult situations (47%), the design and assessment of teaching-learning processes (43%), pedagogical innovation and educational research (43%), conducting interviews with families (39%) and personal balance (34%).
- Specific skills of secondary schoolteachers: 87% of centres agree on the need to improve ability to manage the classroom. The centres also identify a deficit in basic psychopedagogical knowledge (68%), personal balance (55%), detection and action in difficult situations (41%) and a commitment to promote values and respect among students (37%).
- Future skills and specialisations. In reference to preschool and primary teachers, noteworthy are skills related to new technologies and languages, while for secondary schoolteachers they will take on emotional skills and teamwork. As for the specialisations of the future, there is a consensus on the importance of languages and Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), although for primary teachers new technologies and attention to diversity also feature, and for secondary schoolteachers, educational guidance.
